A TRULY FIRM FOUNDATION

Depths of blue
oceans of haze
the moist dew in the valley
settling on the thirsty earth
winding meandering river below
bathed in the blue of the sky
lowered sun turns the haze
into a glowing transparent blanket
steep sides of your canyon rise up
stretching the weary muscles of the earth
gaining new strength as they reach upward.
A few brave trees grow out of your canyon walls
facing the elements with no fear of reprisal
they enjoy the daring view
and share their view with the wild flowers
on your sunny face.
Stripes encircling your edge
tell the story of ages past
revealing centuries and milleniums of existence
amazing for the eyes to see and ponder
your craggy heights are fresh and clean
although older than old
if the rock had eyes and ears
and a mouth to speak
what would we learn
or is that a hard question?
would it not relate to us of rainfall
and sun, and little animals playing on its face
and the changing of the seasons,
the peace and the quiet of God's still nature
the tumbling of pebbles in harsh winter storms
would we really learn anything new, would we?
and where does real joy come from?
does it not come from what the rocks know
and from what we know too,
for what they have seen through the ages
we see now
the quiet peacefulness
and the turning of the seasons
God's majesty and His creation
a truly firm foundation.
